“The first thing I am going to do when I get the keys to my own place is buy a TV…” says Joseph Amos who at 64, has found a new life, thanks to Camillus House’s oasis of hope, aka the Day Center.
Immediately, it is a reminder of how grateful one can be to have a roof over their head to watch TV mindlessly after a long day’s work. But for someone overcoming chronic homelessness, a simple television is indeed an important asset to have – “especially if you don’t know how to cook…” Joseph chuckles as he looks across the room to Elisa, Camillus House’s Day Center supervisor.

Pointing at her, he acknowledges, “Elisa opened the door for me.” This remark from Joseph holds so much power because it talks about transformation – a powerful impact that Elisa and the case managers she works with continue to impart on the lives of so many day center clients who go from being chronically homeless to being safely housed. All it takes is someone who sees through them and believes in them.
25 years ago, Joseph was a different man. He was suffering. “We all have our problems. Your problem is different than mine. I used to be impatient back then. I used to be angry.” Joseph has seen pain, and he knows that acceptance is the first step towards healing. Undeniably, Camillus House has been a kind companion in this healing journey of Joseph.
“You see, I don’t quit. There are bumps on the road, but I won’t quit because I know Camillus House won’t quit on me either.” His confidence is inspiring.
Joseph is longingly looking forward to two things – receiving a haircut, provided free to Camillus House clients and residents and secondly, meeting with his case manager who will provide him updates about his housing situation. He should be able to move into his own place soon.
The thought of knowing Joseph will soon be tucked in the comfort of his own bed in his own place quietly watching TV, proud that he has made it so far is why Camillus House is here!
From sliding away on the streets to the sustenance of the Day Center to long term permanent housing, it is through the generosity of our community that Camillus can continue to offer these services.
